Word from Metropolitan Tikhon on the Feast of the Epiphany
CrimeaPRESS reports:
On the website of the Crimean Metropolis published word of Metropolitan Tikhon of Simferopol and Crimea on the feast of the Epiphany.
“The entire Christian world is celebrating the greatest event — the Baptism of the Lord. In our minds, this is a grandiose, incomparable event in the history of mankind, the history of interaction between God and the human race. But this grandeur is primarily internal. This is hidden greatness — like everything that happens in the Church.
The great river Jordan is glorified. This Jordan is half the size of your temple. A great river, fateful for all humanity! And God descended into this, according to our concepts, almost a trickle and accomplished the work of saving humanity. In the same way, He found himself in a small cave, in an eerie outback of the Roman Empire, which belonged to the Jews — the unknown town of Bethlehem. The God-Man was born in a cattle cave. God, every time choosing ordinary people as his closest disciples, performing the Epiphany on the Jordan, Christmas in a cave, the Last Supper in a small room (the Upper Room of Zion), brings us to the understanding that greatness is hidden in our souls. It is in our souls that, as the holy fathers write, the Nativity of God in the soul of man must take place.
Both the Epiphany and the Last Supper are the task of Orthodox Christians, who have been given the fullness of possible knowledge of God on earth, to perform this great Sacrament not only in our small churches, where the Epiphany also takes place, but also hidden in our souls. This is our purpose; what we should strive for.»
