Yalta and Sevastopol are among the top popular cities for remembering favorite books

CrimeaPRESS reports:

On July 31, we celebrate the Day of Remembering Favorite Books. This is a wonderful occasion to turn over familiar pages, returning to the world where the characters of a novel, story, short story or poem lived. But you must admit that it is especially pleasant to remember books while walking along the very streets where your favorite literary heroes lived, loved and created?

Russian holiday accommodation booking service TVIL.RU conducted a survey on social networks on the topic: in which cities exactly would they like to remember their favorite books? And here is what they answered.

1. The city of Saint Petersburg came in first place, chosen by 40% of voters. It is not surprising that the Northern capital is ahead, as characters from so many classic works lived here — Pushkin, Lermontov, and other greats. And the famous novel by A. Bely is called «Petersburg».

2. In second place is Yalta, the choice of 17% of voters. Not only the action of the classic «Lady with the Dog» takes place in Yalta, but also «12 Chairs», «The Island of Crimea» by Aksyonov, as well as other old and new books.

3. In third place is Sevastopol, 14% of voters voted for it. This city is the location of not only the events of L. N. Tolstoy’s «Sevastopol Stories», but also of Kuprin’s stories, as well as the books of V. Krapivin, a young writer who was fascinated by this city from his youth.

4. Moscow was chosen by 8% of voters. The old capital, which became the first capital again in the 20th century, is the setting for so many novels that it is difficult to count. These include novels and popular stories about Moscow, such as «Moscow and Muscovites» by Vladimir Gilyarovsky, poems, ballads, conspiracy essays. And much, much more.

5. Nizhny Novgorod was chosen by 7% of subscribers. The beauty of the Nizhny Novgorod land was praised by P.I. Melnikov-Pechersky, V.I. Sollogub wrote about it. And in honor of one of its famous sons-writers M. Gorky, Nizhny Novgorod even bore a name for several decades.

6. Ulyanovsk collected 6% of the votes. I.A. Goncharov wrote about Simbirsk in his novel «The Precipice», S.T. Aksakov wrote about it in his books. And now Ulyanovsk is the setting for literary works by many modern authors.

7. 5% of the voters voted for Kostroma. Literary Kostroma is represented by many worthy names, including A.N. Ostrovsky, A.F. Pisemsky, N.A. Nekrasov.

8. Tula was chosen by 2% of subscribers. L.N. Tolstoy lived near Tula, V.A. Zhukovsky worked here, and many of V.V. Veresaev’s works are also connected with this city.

9. The city of Orel – the choice of 1% of all voters. N.S. Leskova and I.A. Bunin worked here, I.S. Turgenev placed this city on the pages of «A Nest of the Gentry». There are many excursions around literary Orel, which tourists enjoy visiting.
