Young sailors of the 15th Artek shift learn to control themselves and the wave
CrimeaPRESS reports:
For several years now, the Artek International Children’s Center has been implementing an additional general developmental specialized program «Sailing School», where young sailors master seamanship and learn to manage single and team yachts. Participants of the 15th Artek shift from specialized detachments hone their skills, develop endurance and character against the backdrop of the picturesque waters of the Black Sea.
Classes at the sailing school are held for children with different levels of training: for those who only took sail for the first time at Artek, and for those who can no longer imagine their life without romance and going to sea under sail.
For professionals, a trip to Artek is an opportunity to improve existing skills and share experience with other young yachtsmen. For beginners, this is an opportunity to try themselves in such a beautiful sport and, perhaps, acquire a new dream.
During the classes, Artek students learn how to “catch the wind,” stay afloat, and how to work in a team. And for this purpose, Artek has 20 single yachts of the Optimist class, as well as boats Raketa and Snipe, designed for a team of several people. During theoretical classes, Artek students learn how not to capsize a yacht, typical mistakes of yachtsmen, and study the laws of physics, thanks to which they will be able to successfully subjugate the sea elements.
For example, in specialized classes, the guys from the Morskoy children’s camp are working hard to improve their skills; they have already mastered two new stages of the maritime program: flag semaphore alphabet, rope coiling technique.
The young sailors of the Khrustalny children’s camp also continue their diligent immersion in the profile: they studied the technique of tying sea knots on their hands and support, and then began to practice the material they had covered.
But the Artek crew from Rechnoye have already made a training trip to sea on a historical copy of Peter the Great’s boat “Saint Nicholas”, as well as a two-masted gaff sailing-motor schooner “St. Tatyana”.
The guys, of course, not all will become professional sailors in the future, but the main thing is that they learn to manage the situation, develop willpower, leadership qualities and become more confident in their abilitiessays program coordinator Igor Kondakov.
Almost two thousand children from all over the country have already been able to feel like real yachtsmen at Artek. At the end of the shift, all the guys who successfully passed the final tests become sailing professionals and are awarded helmsman certificates.
