“Your relative got into an accident”: a criminal case was sent to court in Simferopol on facts of remote fraud

Three students of local educational institutions, aged 20 and 18, were accused of these crimes. In the criminal scheme “Your relative got into an accident”, which was carried out by telephone scammers, the guys played the role of couriers.
One of them found the so-called “job” through an advertisement on the Internet, after which, using friendly ties, he attracted his comrades to carry out courier services for receiving and transferring funds. During the preliminary investigation, it was established that the criminal group deceived pensioners aged 60 to 80 years. The scammers told the elderly over the phone that their loved one needed financial assistance to repair the alleged damage. Acting as part of an organized criminal group, and using the emotionally depressed state of the victims, the detainees took money from deceived pensioners and transferred it to various accounts of accomplices, leaving themselves 5-10% as earnings. The amounts ranged from 150 thousand to 1.5 million rubles. The total damage amounted to 2,700 million rubles. Their involvement in five episodes of criminal activity was established, two of which were committed on the territory of the city of Simferopol, and three on the territory of the federal city of Sevastopol— the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the Republic of Crimea notes.
The investigator of the SCH SU UMVD of Russia for the city of Simferopol charged the defendants in the final version with committing crimes under Part 4 of Art. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The criminal case has been sent to court.
In accordance with the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, the sanction of this article (fraud on an especially large scale) provides for a maximum penalty of imprisonment for up to 10 years.
