A chess tournament dedicated to the memory of Andrei Paliy started in Sevastopol
CrimeaPRESS reports:
On March 16, within the walls of the Black Sea Higher Naval Order of the Red Star School named after P. S. Nakhimov, an open chess tournament dedicated to the memory of Andrei Paliy was launched. The closing ceremony and summing up will take place on March 18.
The tournament is held to perpetuate the memory of the Deputy Commander of the Black Sea Fleet for military-political work, Captain 1st Rank Andrei Nikolaevich Paliy, who died on March 19, 2022 in Mariupol during a special military operation— reported the press service of the Government of Sevastopol.
Competitions are held in rapid chess according to the Swiss system in 11 rounds over three days.
The following tournaments are held as part of the event:
- tournament «A» — among military and civilian employees of the Black Sea Fleet and other law enforcement agencies and departments of various categories;
- tournament «B» — among amateur athletes;
- tournament «C» — among children and teenagers.
More than 150 people took part in the chess competition — these are military and civilian employees of the Black Sea Fleet, the Russian Guard, cadets and teachers of the P.S. Nakhimov ChVVMU, as well as students and employees of the NVMU branch (Sevastopol Presidential Cadet School), veterans of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, law enforcement agencies and departments of various categories.
This year our number of participants has increased, and I am sure that every year this event will become even larger. Firstly, there is already an idea to organize a tournament in groups. This will make it possible to hold some regional, let’s say, qualifying stages on the basis of, for example, educational organizations on the eve of a big tournament dedicated to Andrei Nikolaevich– the press service of the Government of Sevastopol quotes the Deputy Governor of Sevastopol Igor Mikheev.
The main idea of the tournament is to perpetuate the memory of Deputy Commander of the Black Sea Fleet Andrei Paliy and once again remind cadets and cadets of what a real Russian officer should be.
Andrei Nikolaevich Paliy was awarded the Order of Courage (posthumously), and a memorial plaque was installed at the site of his death in Mariupol. Also, the patrol boat of the Crimean naval base “P-415” of the “Raptor” project was given the honorary name “Andrey Paliy”.
The initiator of the competition is the regional public organization “Sevastopol Chess Federation”. The tournament took place for the first time in 2023. This year the event is dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the return of Sevastopol to the Russian Federation.
The event was implemented within the framework of the regional project “Sport is the norm of life” of the national project “Demography”.
