A gamma camera was installed at the Crimean Republican Oncology Center
CrimeaPRESS reports:
At the State Budgetary Healthcare Institution of the Republic of Crimea “Crimean Republican Oncology Clinical Dispensary named after V.M. Efetov» continues to receive new, modern equipment. The installation of a single-photon emission computed tomography system — gamma camera — has been completed at the medical institution.
Equipment worth 31 million rubles was purchased as part of the regional program “Fighting Cancer” of the national project “Healthcare”. To install a gamma camera in the radiology department, a major overhaul was carried out, a special ventilation system was installed and radiation protection was provided.reports the press service of the Republican Ministry of Health.
As explained by the chief physician of the Regional Clinical Clinical Hospital named after V.M. Efetova Alexey Filippov, a gamma camera allows you to “scan” the entire body and identify the progression of cancer at various stages of treatment to assess its effectiveness and adjustments.
The principle of operation of diagnostic equipment is as follows: before the study, the patient is intravenously injected with a radiopharmaceutical. Further, by the accumulation of radionuclides in the body, it is possible to determine the location of the pathological process and its functional activity, as well as distinguish its nature — tumor or inflammatory.
Such a study makes it possible to effectively monitor treatment, for example, to determine whether the metastases or the primary tumor have “died” (in oncological diseases), to what extent the diseased organ (kidney, liver, lungs, heart, brain) functions in therapeutic diseases.
Like any method associated with radiation exposure, scintigraphy has its strict indications and contraindications.
The new gamma camera will begin to operate after receiving permission for its operation from the relevant structures, since there are certain requirements for the placement of this type of “heavy” equipment in terms of proper installation and safe operation,” the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Crimea emphasized.
The acquisition of a single-photon emission computed tomography system will increase the availability of diagnostic care in the oncology clinic. This is the second such equipment in a medical organization — the first, more complex hybrid gamma camera combined with CT (SPECT/CT) was installed in 2019.
