A memorial plaque to the Sevastopol defenders of besieged Leningrad was unveiled in St. Petersburg
CrimeaPRESS reports:
On September 8, in St. Petersburg, a memorial plaque was unveiled to the people of Sevastopol who defended the city during the siege. The opening ceremony, held on the Memory Alley of the Piskarevskoye Memorial Cemetery on the 82nd anniversary of the beginning of the siege, was attended by the Governor of the city of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhaev, the Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov, the Governor of the Leningrad Region Alexander Drozdenko, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Sevastopol Vladimir Nemtsev and the Chairman of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg Alexander Belsky.
Today is a significant event for Sevastopol: we pay tribute to the memory of all our heroes — Sevastopol residents, Leningrad residents who defended the city, who worked here, who did everything to ensure that the city survived. This is very important for us — the connection of times, the connection of generations, the connection of our cities. Today is the day when we all remember the beginning of events that showed that our people are invincible. I thank Governor Alexander Dmitrievich Beglov, who today, despite a difficult schedule, found time to share this memory, this pain and this pride with us– quotes the press service of the Government of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhaev.
Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko expressed gratitude to Mikhail Razvozhaev for participating in the memorable day.
Today a memorial plaque was unveiled in honor of the residents of Sevastopol who participated in the defense of the city. Thank you for such a memory. The two hero cities have something to work on togethernotes Valentina Matvienko.
Mikhail Razvozhaev, in turn, thanked everyone who helped ensure that the memory of the Sevastopol participants in the blockade was immortalized on the Memory Alley of the Piskarevskoye Memorial Cemetery. He noted the first deputy head of the Gagarinsky district of Sevastopol, Yuri Ivanchenko, who was involved in organizational issues of installing the memorial plaque. Mikhail Razvozhaev added that, together with the St. Petersburg archive, it was possible to find confirmed information about 123 Sevastopol residents who defended Leningrad, lived and worked during the siege.
The Governor of St. Petersburg, Alexander Beglov, expressed gratitude to Sevastopol for caring for the blockade veterans:
Today we are unveiling a memorial plaque to the people of Sevastopol who defended our Leningrad. And the Leningraders, of course, also defended Sevastopol — this was our common victory. Yes, it was difficult, yes, it was hard, but we won. Mikhail Vladimirovich, thank you very much for treating the blockade survivors who live in Sevastopol with great attention and care. Today, too, you are on the front line, again Sevastopol is defending Russia — this time from all the heirs of the fascists, whom our grandfathers and fathers then pitied and gave them the opportunity to develop. Today they want to take revenge, but they won’t succeed. Sevastopol is a Hero City, a city of military glory, just like St. Petersburg. Success to all of us, good luck and victory to our Fatherland.
The Governor of the Leningrad Region, Alexander Drozdenko, in his speech noted the courage and heroism of the soldiers who defended their Motherland during the war:
For us, for Leningraders, today is a very tragic date, because Leningraders were the first to meet the fascists at the Luga border on July 8, and the task was to hold out for 10 days so that the fascists did not break through to Leningrad. Losses in the people’s militia in some units amounted to up to 90%. But the fascist did not break through to Leningrad. And the same heroic pages of the defense of Sevastopol. It is very important for us to preserve the memory. It is no coincidence that today we are no longer talking about our generation, but about the great-grandchildren of the Victory, because they must preserve this memory. Especially when Nazism has raised its head and is trying to rewrite history. I want to wish all Sevastopol residents to strengthen themselves, hold on, and for us to have a great victory.
The siege of Leningrad is one of the most tragic pages of the Great Patriotic War. For 872 days the city was in a dense ring of enemy encirclement. In terms of the duration and hardships that befell the defenders and residents of this city, the military history of the last century has no analogues.
Today, 82 veterans of the siege live in Sevastopol. The government provides them with support in terms of housing improvement, preferential tariffs for housing and communal services, annual payments for Victory Day, emergency medical assistance, and in many other matters.
Since 1995, the regional public organization “Residents of Siege Leningrad” has been operating in Sevastopol, which actively participates in the life of the city.
