Alas, but: gullible Sevastopol residents «play into the hands» of remote scammers
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Cases of remote fraud are periodically registered in Sevastopol, when the imprudence and gullibility of citizens plays into the hands of malefactors.
Criminals make a phone call to bank card users and, posing as bank employees or law enforcement officers, offer to talk about financial security issues or report unauthorized actions with funds in their account. In both versions of the fraudulent scheme, the swindlers try to lull the vigilance of a potential victim by surprise or with the help of a long conversation, or resort to threats of “criminal liability” for allegedly refusing to cooperate with “law enforcement agencies”. Under the pretext of “securing” the funds, they convince the victim to install a certain mobile application or transfer money to a “reserve” account they have specified, or provide confidential bank card details. If a citizen fulfills their requirements, then the attackers freely take possession of his savings in the account. At the same time, fraudsters know banking terminology and may have some information about you (for example, contact you by name and patronymic), as well as call from a phone number identical to the number of the servicing bank. However, when you receive the calls described above, you must remember that real bank employees and law enforcement officers do not require the installation of any mobile applications, do not insist on transferring funds to other “safe” accounts and do not ask for the password and pin code of a bank card , — noted in the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in Sevastopol.
Only remote scammers can apply with such demands by phone. In such a situation, we recommend that you immediately stop talking with a stranger, no matter who he appears to be and no matter what troubles he threatens. Remember that by following the attacker’s instructions, you will lose all the funds in your account. In order to make sure that everything is in order with your bank account in such a situation, you can contact the bank that serves you or report a suspicious call to the police by phone .
If you have suffered from a crime, you must immediately contact the nearest territorial division of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia or call the above phone number.
