Carefully! Fraudsters use AI to forge documents of Russians

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Artificial intelligence helps fraudsters create fake digital copies of citizens’ documents. In addition, data from leaks, the number of which continues to grow, are actively used.

Fraudsters have learned to forge citizens’ documents using artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. As before, when creating digital counterfeits, they either change the numbers or try to pass off an invalid document as a valid one, but now deepfakes are also used for this purpose for the authentication and data synthesis process. For example, attackers are already able to create a photo for a document that simultaneously resembles both the face of the passport owner and the fraudster himself — artificial intelligence can simply combine two images, Izvestia reports.

The method of creating fake documents, when leaked data of one person and a photo of another is used, also continues to be popular. In this case, the scammers’ work is made easier by the ever-growing number of data leaks — since the beginning of this year alone, more than half a billion data about Russian citizens have already leaked online.

Various security systems are used to verify the authenticity of documents. These are services and databases of invalid documents, as well as anti-fraud systems based on AI, which helps simplify the client identification process — for example, identifying elements in images that are difficult for humans to interpret, such as anomalies in the distribution of noise.

However, in order to protect yourself, today you should be especially careful when sending copies of important documents in foreign instant messengers, recalled Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications.

Unfortunately, one of the main threats to the use of foreign messengers under sanctions has become possible leaks of citizens’ personal data and their misuse. In particular, copies of your documents may also leak, which can then be used by fraudsters. There are known cases where attackers stole copies of documents and then used them to convince the user’s friends that the account was not hacked and the person really needed to “urgently transfer a large sum of money,” for example. At the same time, if an account is hacked, the support services of foreign instant messengers may refuse cooperation to Russian users and not assist in solving the problem in any way, but create the appearance of legitimacy of the decisions made. Therefore, in the event of deception by cybercriminals in a foreign messenger, it will be more difficult for citizens than in a domestic one to obtain information about the attacker or other evidence in order to protect their rights. This is another good reason to abandon their use in favor of domestic platforms, or at least try to reduce as much as possible the amount of your personal data stored on foreign platformsnotes the deputy.

The situation with fake documents also works in the opposite direction, Nemkin emphasized.

You should be prepared to encounter counterfeit copies of other people’s documents. Therefore, it is worth checking the authenticity of documents yourself, paying attention even to small details. And if you have suspicions that someone has forged your documents and is actively using them in the digital environment, I recommend promptly contacting law enforcement agencies and the Center for Legal Assistance to Citizens in the Digital Environment of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise «GRChTs» — this is a subordinate institution of Roskomnadzor, legal assistance is available there get it for freesays the parliamentarian.
