Crimean ambulance paramedic took birth right in the ambulance carriage

In the Crimean Republican Center for Disaster Medicine and Emergency Medicine, they told a recent case from practice: an ambulance paramedic had to give birth to a patient … and right in the car that went to the call.

At 00:10, the operational dispatch department of the Simferopol ambulance station received a call to a 21-year-old woman in one of the villages of the Simferopol region with the reason «delivery». An ambulance brigade of substation No. 2 was sent to the call, consisting of paramedic Alexander Vasilenko and driver Server Bekirov. The patient had a second pregnancy at 39-40 weeks and, feeling that time was short, she was waiting for an ambulance on the street. At 23:50, the amniotic fluid suddenly broke and violent labor activity began.

Upon examination, it became clear that the woman was in the straining period of childbirth, and they would not have time to get to the maternity hospital, despite the short distance. The obstetric situation developed in such a way that the baby was to be born in an ambulance. Quickly unfolding the obstetrics, the paramedic took delivery— told the Center for Disaster Medicine.

At 00:35 a baby was born who screamed loudly. According to the Apgar scale, immediately after birth, the condition of the newborn was estimated at 8 points. After carrying out the necessary manipulations with the baby, the paramedic assessed the condition of the woman in labor. The woman was excited, her vital signs were normal, there were no signs of separation of the placenta yet. The ambulance team began a medical evacuation to the hospital, constantly monitoring the vital signs of their patients. Soon, the mother and the newborn were handed over to the medical staff of the maternity ward.
