Ecologists fed black vultures and griffon vultures in Crimea

CrimeaPRESS reports:

In Crimea, specialists from the regional Ministry of Natural Resources carried out another feeding of black vultures and griffon vultures. These bird species are rare and endangered, listed in the Red Books of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Crimea.

Birds of prey were fed on Mount Paragilmen. Top dressing was carried out by employees of the subordinated Ministry of Natural Resources of the Republic of Crimea Alushta forest and hunting economy.

Such activities are carried out regularly in order to maintain the population of black vulture and griffon vulture. In the 2022 year, as part of the implementation of the state task, measures are provided for feeding black vultures and griffon vultures.

According to annual observations, there is a gradual increase in the number of individuals of these species arriving at feeding grounds, the Crimean Ministry of Natural Resources reported.

REFERENCE: The black vulture is one of the largest birds of the Crimea (body length — -110 cm, wingspan wings — about 2.5 meters). Nests in the mountains. In deaf, hard-to-reach gorges, in places it forms diffuse «colonies». The white-headed vulture is also a rather big bird — body length — 95 — 110 cm, wingspan — 2, 4 — 2.8 meters. In adult birds, the head and neck are covered with short white down, at the base of the neck there is a white “collar”. The plumage is light brown, flight and tail feathers are black-brown. The general coloration of the young is darker, the “collar” consists of lanceolate-shaped buffy-red feathers. Sedentary and nomadic. It feeds on the corpses of wild and domestic animals; in search of food, he regularly visits cattle burial grounds and places of unloading meat processing waste.
