Experts began restoration of a 500-year-old book from the funds of Chersonesos
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Later edition will be shown to tourists
The museum-reserve «Tauric Chersonesos» was engaged in the restoration of a unique book of 1568. «The book for the month of June, containing all the services appropriate to it» was published in Venice. Another similar example of the Venetian edition is on Mount Athos and on the island of Halki.
According to Tourist portal of Crimea, the book is part of a collection of three published by Ippolit Valerys Mena for June, July and August, which is in the library fund of the Tauric Chersonese Museum-Reserve. For its restoration, specialists with knowledge of the Greek language and Byzantine hymnography were required. Therefore, the publication was sent to the All-Russian Artistic Research and Restoration Center named after Academician I. E. Grabar, the staff of the museum-reserve specified.
The initial stage of the restoration was devoted to the restoration of the first pages of the book monument. For this, specialists manually made special paper from flax, so that it would be possible to glue the old sheets. According to the press service of the museum institution, the most destroyed part of the book is now being restored.
How unique the publication can be judged not only by the age of the book, which is almost 5 centuries old. In the famous reference book «Greek Bibliography», compiled by the French Byzantinist and linguist Emile Legrand, there is evidence that only one such example of the Venetian edition has survived. It is located on Mount Athos in the Russikon Monastery and in the library of the Theological Seminary, as well as in the Ypsilo Monastery on the island of Lesvos.— said the staff of the museum-reserve.
After the restoration, the book will definitely be included in one of the museum expositions or a separate exhibition will be devoted to it, the press service of the museum-reserve noted.
