In Russia — Lung Cancer Prevention Week

CrimeaPRESS reports:

At the initiative of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, this week is devoted to highlighting the issues of lung cancer prevention. This is a malignant neoplasm that develops from the integumentary epithelium of the bronchial mucosa, bronchial mucous glands of the bronchioles and pulmonary alveoli.

Oncological disease is always multifactorial, it is characterized by the fact that a large number of causes can lead to the development of a malignant neoplasm. Factors in the development of lung cancer can be divided into two categories — internal and external. The former include genetic predisposition, chronic diseases and precancerous conditions that are not treated for a long time. External factors are exposed to people whose professions are associated with the inhalation of harmful vapors— quotes the press service of the chief freelance oncologist of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Crimea Elena Chirva.

The chief freelance oncologist emphasized the negative role of smoking as a factor in the development of lung cancer. Nicotine inhaled by a person negatively affects the bronchial mucosa and contributes to tissue changes. In the vast majority of patients suffering from lung cancer, the development of the disease is associated with smoking, both active and passive.

Inhalation of any substances adversely affects the mucosa of our bronchi. Lung cancer is more common among men because there are more smokers among them. Therefore, it is so important to start disease prevention with conversations with schoolchildren about the threats of smoking, so that adolescents are aware of all the risks associated with smoking cigarettes.— says Elena Chirva.

Lung cancer can be detected during medical examinations and preventive medical examinations.

X-ray examinations are provided as part of preventive measures. If changes are visible on the images, then the patient is sent for a CT scan. Then it is necessary to verify the tumor, its structure, so the next stage is fiberoptic bronchoscopy, during which it is possible not only to examine, but also to take material for intravital pathoanatomical examination. It is also necessary to perform additional studies to exclude distant metastasis — this is CT of the abdominal cavity and, in some cases, MRI of the brain. Bone scintigraphy may be performed to rule out bone metastasissays the expert.

Summing up, the chief Crimean oncologist urged people to be attentive to their own health and regularly check it during preventive medical measures.
