In Sevastopol, cases of deception under the fraudulent scheme “Your relative became the culprit of an accident” have become more frequent.
CrimeaPRESS reports:
It was established that in the afternoon, three pensioners, 81, 89 and 94 years old, received a call from unknown persons, who in two cases introduced themselves as employees of the investigative authorities, and in one case as a lawyer, and reported that their granddaughter, daughter and niece, respectively, were the culprits of the accident with the victims. Allegedly, in order to be released from criminal liability and compensate for damages to the victims, the callers demanded large sums. While communicating with the victims, the scammers did not give them the opportunity to call their relatives back on their own and convinced them to transfer all their available cash to controlled couriers. Thinking that they were helping their loved ones avoid trouble, three elderly women handed over 100, 300 and 340 thousand rubles to the accomplices of telephone scammers. Later, after contacting their relatives and making sure that none of them had been involved in a road accident, they realized that they had become victims of deception and reported the incident to the police— reported the press service of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs in Sevastopol.
Sevastopol police urge residents city to tell their elderly relatives about this fraudulent scheme, and especially mothers and grandmothers. Due to their age characteristics, older people cannot always correctly assess a difficult situation. Be sure to warn them that when you receive calls that a relative has been involved in an accident, you should immediately stop talking, call your loved ones back yourself and report the incident to the police by calling 102.
Dear residents of the hero city! By educating our elderly relatives about this threat and working together, we can protect them from the criminal attacks of telephone scammers.
