What are the tickets
As a rule, train tickets are refundable. They can be handed over if you just changed your mind about going both before the train departure and after, and return part of the money.
Since 2019, passengers have the opportunity to buy non-refundable train tickets. They are on average 10-25% cheaper. But you can return non-refundable tickets only in exceptional cases: illness of a passenger or his companion, death of a close relative. Even in this case, the amount will not be fully refunded and fees will be withheld. You can apply for an involuntary refund no later than five days after the departure of the train.
How much money is returned

The cost of a train ticket consists of several points, so it is not easy to immediately calculate the exact amount of the refund. The ticket includes the cost of transportation — a fee for using the infrastructure of the railway — and the cost of a reserved seat — a fee for using a seat in the car. Their ratio is different, for example, in a branded train, a reserved seat is more expensive.
Service fees are always withheld upon return: the Russian Railways fee is 2 rubles 60 kopecks, the fees of the aggregator site, for example, Tutuand the processing fee for the return.
The rest of the amount to be refunded will depend on the time left before the departure of the train, the cost of transportation and the reserved seat. If eight hours or more, the entire amount will be returned, except for service fees.
If there are eight to two hours left before departure, service fees and half the cost of the reserved seat are withheld, that is, the passenger will receive approximately 60-70% of the total ticket price.
If there are less than two hours left before departure or the train has already departed, but less than 12 hours have passed since departure, service fees and the cost of a reserved seat are withheld. The passenger will receive approximately 30-40% of the total ticket price.
If more than 12 hours have passed since the departure of the train, then in this case even a return ticket can be returned only for a good reason. For example, you are sick.
When buying a ticket for Tutu, you can activate the service «100% refund of the railway ticket». With it, the entire amount paid for the ticket will be returned, with the exception of the cost of the service itself. The price of the service is from 20 to several hundred rubles, depending on the cost of the ticket. The service is valid until the train departs: if it has already left, it will not be possible to return the money.

Money for a non-refundable ticket cannot be returned unless there is a good reason. If there is such a reason, the fare will be refunded without the cost of a reserved seat, as well as the cost of bed linen and Russian Railways services, for example, food or transportation of an animal, if you paid for them. Fees will be withheld: Russian Railways fee — 2 rubles 60 kopecks and the fee of the aggregator site when you bought the ticket indirectly.
However, even if you just changed your mind about going, you can get a refund of part of the amount for additional services: transportation of animals, extra baggage and meals, as well as the cost of bed linen. If you did not pay for additional services, you can only get back the cost of bed linen. The price of a set of bed linen depends on the type of car and train — from 188.2 rubles to 888 rubles.
How to get money for a return ticket before train departure
Contact the ticket office at the station (if there is a separate return office, go there), the carrier’s website if you bought tickets directly from him, or the aggregator website. Tutu customers can issue a refund in their personal account.
The station and ticket office can be any, the main thing is that they are connected to the return system. A list of such cash desks is available on the Russian Railways website. At the box office, you will need a passport, a ticket bought at the box office, or a boarding pass. If you have an SMS or a letter with an order number, then the coupon can not be printed, just say the number.
How to get money for a return ticket after train departure
If you missed the train, then you will not be able to return the money on the site. You will need to contact the ticket office at the station from which you were supposed to leave. If from the moment of departure it took from 20 minutes to three hours, then the money will simply be returned to the card. If less than 20 minutes (the train just left) or more than three hours, you will have to file a claim for a refund and wait for the money up to 60 days.
How to get money for a non-refundable ticket before and after train departure
If the reason for the return is valid, you need to contact the Russian Railways cash desk, file a claim for a refund and provide documents: for example, a certificate from a doctor with a stamp from a medical institution or a sick leave with a stamp. The certificate must indicate the date that falls on the date of the trip, on the sick leave — the interval in which the date of the trip falls. You will also need the passport for which the ticket was issued, a 14-digit order number, a ticket on the form or a coupon.
You can make an involuntary return no later than five days after the departure of the train. The ticket can be returned due to an illness or accident that occurred before the train’s departure, so the date of issue and the incident must be on the certificate or other document.
If you just changed your mind about going and want to get money for bed linen and services, contact the place where you bought the ticket: to the aggregator site, to the Russian Railways website or to the box office. Refunds can also be issued after the departure of the train. After the departure of the train, the cost of linen and services can only be returned at the box office.
In all cases, the money is returned to the card with which you bought the ticket. If you bought a ticket in cash at the box office, you will also receive a refund in cash.
