Is it profitable to take a vacation in May — experts explain

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The May holidays are approaching, and some Russians who want to extend the weekend period are thinking about taking time off or vacation in May. Is it profitable to receive vacation pay this month, Avito Works experts will tell you. Previously, they found out which months are the most profitable to go on vacation.

If you do not take into account various variables in the form of sick leave, promotions, transfers to a new place, then when calculating vacation pay, the average daily earnings for the last 12 months are taken into account, which is multiplied by the number of days of rest. This is important because salary depends on the number of days worked in a month. Therefore, in order to get more vacation pay, it is better to choose months with a large number of working days. In 2024, these months will be July (23 days), August (22 days) and October (23 days).

In May, it is unprofitable to take vacation or time off — in 2024, there are only 20 working days in this month, which means vacation pay will be less than if the employee went on vacation in July, August or October.

To extend the May holidays, you can take a day off, but in this case you need to be aware of possible “accumulations” in the form of additional days off. Employees may receive time off for overtime and/or work on holidays and weekends. Overtime has a cumulative property, that is, for two hours of overtime, a specialist must receive at least two hours of rest. In turn, holidays and weekends are compensated in a single amount of time off.

Time off can be obtained not only for work reasons, but also in connection with medical procedures. For example, a medical examination gives a specialist under 40 years of age the right to take legal time off once every three years, and employees over 40 years of age are entitled to annual time off to undergo a medical examination. In addition, blood donors can get a convenient extra day off.

At the same time, for 27% of Russians, on the contrary, going to work on the May holidays becomes a way to earn extra money or get other days off. Thus, 22% of survey participants reported that they receive a double payment for working on holidays, 6% receive a single payment, 9% receive an increase or bonus for overtime, and 5% receive additional days off as compensation.
