July 15 — Beregini, St. Photius Day

CrimeaPRESS reports:

July 15 is the date on which they paid tribute to the mythical creatures — coastlines. These are fairy maidens, prototypes of mermaids. The people believed that they come out of the water and sit on the branches of a birch. The tradition of the day: embroidered towels with the image of a duck, one of the incarnations of the coast, were tied to birch branches. They were sometimes thrown into the water, as a gift to the inhabitants of the underwater kingdom.

Our ancestors believed: if on this day the shore sisters were not properly appeased, they could get angry and drag a person into the water with them or send a disease on him. According to ancient legend, all human diseases and fevers originate in the water — the habitat of the coast and the water. But if the coast is in a good mood, only good can be expected from them. According to popular beliefs, they protect livestock during a watering place, help the poor and fishermen, endow hay grass with healing properties. In many areas, they are portrayed as beautiful girls who help peasant women weave and sew while the whole family is in the hayfield.

On July 15, the Church honors the memory of St. Photius, Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Rus’. It was he who ruled the Russian Church for 21 years, protecting the grandson of Dmitry Donskoy, Vasily Vasilyevich, from enemies and their intrigues. He was an intermediary between the Russian princes, whose relations often led to contention and quarrels.

Signs for July 15 are as follows:

  • Are the leaves already turning yellow? Autumn and winter will be early.
  • A lot of berries appeared in the forest by July 15 — a sign that the winter will be frosty.

Name days are celebrated today: Arsen, Arseny, Angelica, Valdemar, David, Ignatius, Mark, Maxim, Felix.
