Our ancestors called March 28 “forest grooming.” The day was dedicated to the forest, going there to worship the local spirits.
Experts note that from ancient times Russian people had a special relationship with the forest, because it was he who gave people the same household utensils or equipment — everything was made from wood. In addition, the forest often served a protective function, since it is very difficult to pass through the dense thicket. On this day, healers collected herbs and medicinal plants, charmed them, and prepared various potions. It was supposed to be on March 28 to remove damage and treat head diseases. It was also an excellent time for making amulets.
In the church on March 28 they honor the memory of the holy martyr Nikander. As the legend says, while working as a doctor, he performed a large number of good deeds towards Christians during the organized persecution of them. Nikander visited prisoners in prisons, consoled martyrs, and buried those who were executed. One day, when Nikander was trying to bury Christians who had been torn to pieces by lions, he was seen by the imperial guards, who seized Nikander and soon executed him.
