New Khersones is being built in the paleovalley
CrimeaPRESS reports:
The construction site of New Chersonesos on Eroshenko and Ancient streets was once a valley of an ancient river. The water is still there. About it «Sevastopol newspaper» Professor of Moscow State University, Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences Natalya Lubnina and Associate Professor of the Faculty of Geology of Moscow State University Oleg Krylov reported.
The presence of a paleo river in this place is evidenced by the accumulation of water, which has now formed a whole lake, as well as paleo wells that have survived to this day, there are about a dozen of them. Thus, the fact of water accumulation has its own explanation — the flow of the river is blocked by Ancient Street, the level of which is 5-7 meters higher than the valley. Interestingly, several wells have been preserved on the other side of the street. This means that the river there continued its course along the paleovalley and eventually flowed into Karantinnaya Bay. The paleo-river is still flowing, and the water that it feeds from underground sources is not polluted by anything. In different wells, water is at different depths, which indicates that there is some kind of underground current. When the river was blocked by a street, a dam turned out— say the journalists of «SG».
Scientists have an assumption that there used to be drains that allowed the river to cross the street and continue flowing to Karantinnaya Bay. Therefore, before the current construction work, water did not accumulate here. In addition, according to drilling data, the paleovalley is composed of sands, which allowed water to flow into Karantinnaya Bay.
According to geologists, the wells themselves are also very interesting. Probably some of them were used to store fish, water and something else. The scientists were also amazed that the reservoirs, knocked out in dense rocks, have the correct shape.
Wells have different shapes: round, rectangular, square. We managed to photograph them, but then we saw that they were covered up, and, most likely, no one will ever see where these wells were. It would be nice if they were not covered up, but preserved, covered with something and made objects of display for visitors so that they would have an idea of how ancient people lived— N. Lubnina expressed her opinion.
Recall that the builders, having despaired of fighting the flow of water, decided to create a reservoir in New Chersonese, which they decided to call the Geroon River.
