November 11 is a kind of “professional” holiday for all those who keep sheep. On this day the church celebrates the memory of Saints Abraham and Anastasia. Avramia was considered the patroness of sheepherders, and Anastasia was considered the patroness of sheep. It was customary for them to pray for the health of livestock, for the protection of barns and sheep pens from fire and damage. It was believed that on the day of their memory, predators bypassed cattle.
On this day, shepherds were honored with all their hearts. The women baked pies from fresh flour and brought gifts to the shepherds. They believed that in this case they would better monitor the herd. Usually in the northern regions sheep were sheared on November 11, while in the southern regions, on the contrary, the shearing ended. Threads were spun from sheep wool, warm mittens or socks were knitted, and fabrics used for sewing outerwear for the winter could be woven.
The people also had a tradition on the day of remembrance of saints to go around the sheep pastures with icons of Saints Abraham and Anastasia, and also to leave them in the fields. This was done in order to protect against all sorts of misfortunes, as well as to give the livestock well-being and good offspring.
