November 27 is Philip's day. We treat the Brownie and prepare for the Nativity Fast
CrimeaPRESS reports:
In villages in Rus’ on November 27, there was a tradition: they took food for the Brownie outside the hut. This was done in order to ask the Brownie to keep the cattle during the winter — they believed that after this it would not get sick. Also at this time weddings ended. Spinning began. The girls gathered in the same house in the evenings, brought work with them (in particular, spinning wheels) and spent time talking, joking and jokes. They said: “A lazy spinner has no shirt.” Laziness and refusal to work were not encouraged.
In addition, in Rus’ on November 27, many girls began to guess. They left a piece of beef from dinner and put it under the pillow, inviting their betrothed to “get started.” They said that after this the groom would appear in a dream. After dinner on November 27, there was no need to clear the table — the Brownie would enjoy the food when people went to bed. By the way, they said that if the next day there is a lot of snow on the threshold, it means that the Brownie is happy.
In addition, November 27 is the period of fasting before the Nativity Fast, which lasted until January 6 (Christmas Eve). We ate meat and dairy dishes. But, from November 28, you could only eat vegetables, lean cereals, fruits, and bread. On holidays it was allowed to eat fish and vegetable oil. The monastery charter also stated that one should have meals once a day after sunset. But this rule is not strict.
On November 27, the church honors the memory of Saint Philip, who is one of the 12 apostles, disciples of Jesus. The Gospel of John says that Philip came from the same family as Peter and Andrew, and was called to be a disciple at the same time as them. In addition, he was married and raised daughters, which confirms the fact that the apostles were not a priori lonely. Preaching Christianity, Philip became famous for a large number of miracles. So, once he even resurrected a dead baby, whom his inconsolable mother brought to him. And also, the legend says, there was a case when the pagans attacked Philip and wanted to stone him. However, as proof of the existence of Jesus, Philip resurrected a dead man who was being carried on a stretcher at that time. Be that as it may, Philip ended his life as a martyr — he was executed for missionary activity.
