Work on the restoration of the Obelisk to the Hero City of Sevastopol will start this year, the project is planned to be completed in 2023 a year. It includes the restoration of the Obelisk itself, the retaining wall with bas-reliefs and the improvement of the observation deck.
The restoration of the monument will be under my special control. This is an iconic place! All Sevastopol residents will also follow the progress of work and have been waiting for restoration for a long time , — the press service of the Government of Sevastopol quotes Governor Mikhail Razvozhaev.
The obelisk is an object of cultural heritage of regional significance. Recall that the order for the restoration of the Obelisk was given by the President in 2017 year.
The height of the Obelisk is meters. The authors of the project were well-known Soviet sculptors and architects: Ivan Makogon, Stanislav Chizh, Adolf Sheffer, Alexei Bagley, Musiy Katernoga and others. of the year. It is the tallest of its kind in the Hero Cities. The decree on awarding the city with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal are engraved on the monument. Starting from 1987 year, as a result of the impact of the sea, as well as the mistakes of the builders during the rationalization of replacing the material of the anchors in the lining of the Obelisk and in the memorial retaining walls, the slabs of Alma stone began to collapse. There were large punctures in the slabs of facing stone, which fell from a great height onto the observation platforms under the Obelisk. This created a danger to visitors, and the area was fenced with a metal fence along the contour of the site.
The scientific and design documentation for the preservation of the cultural heritage site was developed in collaboration with the Honored Architect of the Ukrainian SSR Adolf Lvovich Sheffer, one of the authors of the original project of the Obelisk of Glory on Cape Khrustalny and was previously approved by the Sevnasledie.
