Post No. 1 in Sevastopol is 50 years old

CrimeaPRESS reports:

Today, a solemn event dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Post No. 1 in the Hero City of Sevastopol took place. The guard of honor on Nakhimov Square was opened on May 9, 1973 at the memorial of the heroic defense of Sevastopol in 1941-1942. Schoolchildren of the Hero City have been keeping an honorary watch at the memorial throughout the entire time.

Post number 1 is a symbol of our memory, these are our traditions. I think that it is no coincidence that Post No. 1 in honor of the Heroes of the Great Patriotic War is located next to Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov Square, which only emphasizes the inextricable link between generations. And the fact that among the Postovites there are very respected people who grew up from Sevastopol schoolchildren and became cosmonauts, leaders, real workers, athletes, teachers — you can’t count everything, it’s natural. Today, this is a memory that we need more than ever, and, probably, among the guys who are defending our Motherland today, there are also our guardians, because Sevastopol has always raised such young men and women who are ready to defend their beloved Motherland— the press service of the Government of Sevastopol quotes the Senator of the Russian Federation Ekaterina Altabaeva.

In 2022, the Memory Watch at Post No. 1 was recognized as a historical tradition and enshrined at the level of the main document of the city — in the Charter of Sevastopol.

I want to sincerely congratulate all of us on the anniversary, and say the warmest words of gratitude, and convey congratulations from Governor Mikhail Vladimirovich Razvozhaev. Today we are opening a cycle of events dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Post No. 1. The Hero City of Sevastopol is unique even in that the watch at Post No. 1 has never been interrupted — not for one minute for half a century. For this, we must say thanks to all our residents, all Sevastopol residents and those who continue this tradition now, especially those who gave birth to this tradition, who put a lot of effort and themselves to make this tradition the pride of our city— said Deputy Governor Igor Mikheev.

After 50 years, the military order at Post No. 1 is unchanged. Exactly at 8 o’clock in the morning, the guards gather at the guardhouse, change into uniforms ironed at home and take over the watch. Each Sevastopol school takes part in the guard of honor.

As a child, I often watched the sentries, which stood evenly, beautifully — they seemed to me not real, as if they were made of wax. They walked in marching steps, ritually — this is very beautiful, and I did not think that an ordinary schoolboy could do this. I thought it was done by cadets, Nakhimov students. But no — ordinary schoolchildren do it— Dmitry Basarab, a youth member of school No. 19, notes.

Over the years of the existence of Post No. 1 in Sevastopol, more than 70,000 youth members of the Youth Army went through the school of courage and patriotism, who became worthy successors of the first posts — students of school No. 44, winners of the All-Union military sports game «Eaglet», who entered the guard of honor in 1973 on the opening day of the Post No. 1. Among those who carried the Memory Watch are Sevastopol cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov, Chairman of the Legislative Assembly Vladimir Nemtsev.
