«Red Book Replenishment» of the Zoo Corner of the Simferopol Children's Park
CrimeaPRESS reports:
A pair of griffon vultures have become parents.
The birth of a griffon vulture chick in captivity is a unique phenomenon. This is only the third case in Crimea, two of which occurred in the zoo corner of the Children’s Park in Simferopol. The baby was born in April. He is in the nest under the care of his parents. The zoo’s employees protect the peace of the Red Book family and ask visitors to do the same.
Since the birth of the baby, the diet of the feathered family has been strengthened: the birds’ portions of chicken and beef have been increased. The parents feed the cub by regurgitating meat. Little by little, the chick itself begins to show interest in food. The baby is already partially covered with adult plumage and is beginning to stand on its legs. He will become independent by 6-7 months.
The griffon vultures appeared in the zoo corner in the early 2000s. They managed to have offspring in 2020. We are very happy that after 4 years the vultures became parents again.
Griffon vultures are listed in the Red Book of Russia. No more than 150 individuals live in the wild nature of the peninsula.
