Temporary parking will be built on the territory of Tauride Chersonese

A plot of land on the shore of Karantinnaya Bay with an area of ​​800 sq.m., reports «Sevastopol newspaper», will be turned into parking for official vehicles. They promise to dismantle it as soon as the archaeological park “New Chersonesos” opens.

The construction of a temporary parking lot is a necessary measure, since the parking area in front of the central entrance to the museum-reserve is closed due to the construction of a new archaeological park. It was decided to organize parking right on the territory of the settlement, but at the same time ensuring the safety of cultural heritage sites of federal significance, of which there are 12.

According to the state examination act to ensure the safety of the cultural heritage site “The Ancient City of Tauride Chersonesos” and its components, when organizing temporary parking for official use in the work area there are: the landmark site “The Ancient City of Tauride Chersonesos and the fortresses of Chembalo and Kalamita”; ensemble “The Ancient City of Chersonesos Tauride”; “Coastal defensive line with towers and gates”; «Citadel»; “Roman Baths in the Citadel”; «Building of medieval times in the citadel»; “Tower XIX with the 18th curtain”; «Towers XX and XX'»; “Curtain 20 and towers XVII and XVIII”; «The ancient settlement of Chersonese Tauride»; “Port area. Residential areas I-II»; «Citadel. Praetorium.»

Closest to the organized parking is a fragment of the “Primorsky defensive line with towers and gates.” A dirt road passes by the archaeological site, along which it is planned to transport crushed stone to the parking area.

The visual overview of the site and the entire ensemble will not be disrupted; in addition, the parking is temporary — until the opening of the archaeological park in 2024. The planned work does not contradict the protective obligation of the cultural heritage site… On the territory of the landmark, the construction of a new road network is permitted, taking into account the preservation of cultural heritage objects, valuable natural objects, — noted in the state examination report.

The parking lot construction project does not provide for excavation work; the layer of crushed stone with which the territory will be filled will be cut off from the cultural layer with geotextiles. Border blocks will be installed along the contour without being buried in the ground, the loads on which will be minimized through a two-layer laying of crushed stone of different fractions.

The experts who carried out the examination indicate that this parking place coincides with the once-existing parking place for official vehicles during the Soviet and Ukrainian periods. It is also prescribed that all work must be carried out accompanied by specialists from the museum-reserve.
