Installation of a sculpture based on Balter’s story “Goodbye, boys” has been completed in Yevpatoria

CrimeaPRESS reports:

On the embankment. Tereshkova in Yevpatoria, builders completed the installation of a sculptural group dedicated to the heroes of the autobiographical story by writer Boris Balter “Goodbye, boys.” Its authors are the Sevastopol sculptor Konstantin Tsikhiev, who was personally present at the installation of the monument, and the architect Georgy Grigoryants.

The monument is dedicated to the Yevpatorians who went to the front from school in 1941. It consists of four figures: the three heroes of the story Volodya Belov, Sasha Krieger and Vitya Anikin sit on the bridge and look at the sea, a little further away the author of the work stands by an open book and watches them.

In his story, Boris Balter talks about the last school days of three young men. The action takes place in 1936 in the seaside Evpatoria. Friends reflect on friendship, first love and the meaning of their lives, which will soon be turned upside down by war.

The title of the work was taken from a line of a poem by Bulat Okudzhava, with whom the author was friends. In 1962, the story was published in the magazine “Youth” and was a stunning success among readers, and in 1963 it was published as a separate book and was translated into many languages. Already in 1964, director Mikhail Kalik made a film of the same name based on the book. The main characters of the story were played by famous Soviet actors — Evgeny Steblov, Nikolai Dostal and Mikhail Kononov. The images of boys they created formed the basis of the monument.

The grand opening of the sculptural composition will take place after the completion of the embankment reconstruction.
