The memorial “Mass grave of soldiers who took part in the second defense of Sevastopol on Cape Fiolent” is open

CrimeaPRESS reports:

On May 6, Governor Mikhail Razvozhaev took part in the opening ceremony of the memorial “Mass grave of soldiers who participated in the second defense of Sevastopol at Cape Fiolent.”

On the plates are inscribed 343 names of participants in the battles for Sevastopol in 1941-1944. According to documents on the losses of personnel of various units, the remains of the city’s defenders rest in this place — on Fiolent, next to the St. George’s Monastery.

Among the soldiers who found eternal peace here is Hero of the Soviet Union Gerasim Arkhipovich Rubtsov, commander of the 456th regiment of the 109th Infantry Division, who organized a perimeter defense in the area of the monastery and Cape Fiolent in late June — early July 1942 and died tragically, like almost all the fighters in his group.

The memorial was landscaped at the initiative of Sevastopol public organizations with the support of Federation Council Senator Ekaterina Altabaeva, the governor of Sevastopol said.

The initiative to open the memorial was taken by Sevastopol public organizations — veterans, border guard soldiers, and they were actively supported by Federation Council Senator Ekaterina Borisovna Altabaeva. Here, on Fiolent, many of our soldiers died. Among them is Gerasim Arkhipovich Rubtsov, Hero of the Soviet Union. His place of death has not been established, but it is known for certain that he died here, on this line, the defense of which he organized. Until now, there has been no place marked for his resting place. And now his name is on a new memorial, which contains the names of well-known and identified by public fighters who participated in the defense of Sevastopol. There are many doctors from our military hospital here, including soldiers who died here during the liberation of Sevastopol. Today I would like to say words of gratitude to every defender of our city. We are systematically returning their names, returning this memory and will cherish it forever,” the press service of the Government of Sevastopol quotes Mikhail Razvozhaev.

One of the members of the initiative group was a military veteran who previously served in the Black Sea Fleet — Igor Savostin.

I have been doing search work for twenty years. Five years ago, on the same May day, I came here and saw the grave of Private Timofey Romanov. Like any Sevastopol resident, knowing what bloody battles took place here during the defense and liberation of Sevastopol, I began my investigation. The names of the city’s defenders were found in the archives of the Ministry of Defense, and many people helped in the search for materials. And today, before Victory Day, before the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the city, the memorial opened in Sevastopol — the patriotic capital of Russiahe said.

Participants in the opening ceremony laid flowers at the memorial “Mass grave of soldiers who took part in the second defense of Sevastopol on Cape Fiolent” and honored their memory with a minute of silence.
