“Your relative got into an accident”: a story from Yalta about fraud and a 16-year-old “courier”

An 82-year-old local resident contacted the Yalta police duty station. Unknown persons fraudulently defrauded her of a large sum of money.

The police found out that the victim received a phone call from a man who introduced himself as a law enforcement officer. He said that the granddaughter of a pensioner allegedly got into an accident and to help the “injured” party, 300,000 rubles need to be transferred. The victim gave this amount to the courier who came to her. Only after this did the concerned pensioner find out from her relatives that no one had been involved in an accident, and the story told by the unknown person was fiction.,” they told about a typical case at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea.

The suspect, the “courier,” turned out to be a 16-year-old resident of Simferopol, who was detained by law enforcement officers for committing a similar crime in Sevastopol. The young man confessed.

The investigator of the police department No. 1 “Alupkinsky” of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for the city of Yalta opened a criminal case on the grounds of a crime under Part 3 of Art. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Fraud”. An appropriate decision will be made regarding the suspect, based on the legislation of the Russian Federation, since the young man has reached the age of criminal responsibility— reported the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea.

After interviewing the young man, the operatives learned that, wanting to earn extra money, the young man agreed to participate in a criminal scheme called “Your relative got into an accident,” the victims of which are most often elderly citizens. The detainee received a message in a messenger from an unknown person with the specified address where he needed to pick up the agreed amount of money, and the account number for their transfer. In this case, the suspect was entitled to his own percentage of the profit from the transaction. The case materials have been transferred to the investigative authorities.
