Monastic life is being revived in Chersonesos

A festive Divine Liturgy was held today in Sevastopol on the territory of the Tauride Chersonese Nature Reserve. The service was led by Metropolitan Tikhon of Simferopol and Crimea.

The hearts of those present were filled with special trepidation, because today the Orthodox world celebrates the Presentation of the Lord. This holiday traditionally symbolizes the meeting of man with God, as well as the meeting of the Old and New Testaments. Today in Tauride Chersonese there was a meeting of the past with the future, since the Divine Liturgy in the Basilica in 1935 marked the beginning of the revival of the Chersonese Monastery,” reports the press service of the State Historical and Archaeological Museum-Reserve “Tavrichesky Chersonesos”.

The director of the museum-reserve, Elena Morozova, shared her thoughts on cooperation with the future monastery:

There are a great many examples in Russia where museum complexes are located on the territory of a monastery, which are good neighbors and cooperate. This is due to the history that in the middle of the 19th century there was a monastery in Tauride Chersonese. Now, together with the bishop and the diocese, we are reviving this monastery. And the fact that today, on Candlemas, this solemn service took place, lit the first star of the restoration of monastic life in Tauride Chersonese. The museum-reserve has always worked together with the deanery. There are two Orthodox churches on the territory of Chersonesos; the spiritual and moral aspect is key in our work. Today justice has triumphed: the revival of the monastery has begun. And we will always go hand in hand with the deanery, working for the good of people.

Note that the revival of the shrine occurs after a hundred years. It was during these February days of 1924 that the monastery on Chersonesos was closed. Until 1924, the monastery estate included the Church of the Seven Hieromartyrs of Chersonesos, the abbot’s building, the old and new refectory, two hotels and utility rooms. Exactly a century ago, the monastery buildings were liquidated and transferred to the Chersonesos Museum.

In 1925, in the building of the former new refectory, after renovation, an exhibition of the ancient history of Chersonesos and a scientific laboratory were located on the second floor, and a canteen for workers was located in the western half. The first floor was occupied by a collection of finds from excavations. The building of the new monastery hotel was transferred to the city’s housing stock in 1924, and from the late 1970s it began to be used for the needs of the museum.

And in 2024, a historic decision was made to revive the St. Vladimir monastery and “Tauric Chersonese” as the spiritual center of the country and Russian Orthodoxy.

Chersonese has preserved Orthodoxy, retained that spirit of friendliness and joy from meeting any person who comes here… I would like to thank the governor of Sevastopol Mikhail Razvozhaev and his team for their great help in reviving the monastery. In the person of Elena Aleksandrovna Morozova, director of the Tauride Chersonese Museum-Reserve, I would like to thank all the employees of the institution who so patiently and carefully preserved and restored this sacred place for us, the place of baptism of each of us, the place of baptism of all Rus’.

I would like to thank the one whose idea was to revive this monastery and create a wonderful historical, archaeological, educational center for our country and, I have no doubt, for the entire Orthodox world. This is Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, who in 2015, having visited Chersonese, set specific goals and drew what should be here. And we are only the executors of this wonderful plan, the implementation of which will delight not only our contemporaries, but also generations of Russian people, Orthodox people, and many, many who come here. I would like to thank the new brethren of the St. Vladimir Monastery, the fathers and bishops from all over Crimea, who have gathered here to share this spiritual celebration— said the Head of the Crimean Metropolis Tikhon today.

The Metropolitan of Simferopol and Crimea told what the newly created Chersonesos monastery will be like.

It will be amazingly beautiful, it will attract many people, and they will find their faith here, because there will be a museum of Christianity, and a museum of antiquity and Byzantium, and a museum of Crimea and New Russia, restored and reconstructed quarters of the old city from the time of Prince Vladimir. There will be food for thought for adults and plenty of exciting adventures for children here.,” Bishop Tikhon emphasized.
