In fact, it is still a Soviet rocket (a variation on the Tochki-U theme), but quite formidable and already modified.
By Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, on March 30, 2023, Russian air defense systems for the first time shot down a new Ukrainian operational-tactical missile «Grom-2». Ukrainian defense enterprises have been trying to build this complex for 30 years. Built. And as a guideline in terms of launch range and deployment time, the Russian Iskander complexes were taken.
As writes the concept of the Grom-2 complex managed to interest a foreign customer. One of the likely investors of the project is Saudi Arabia. The local bureau of KACST, presumably, became a partner of Yuzhnoye Design Bureau. The Grom-2 complex was to include a self-propelled launcher containing two containers with missiles, ground-to-ground missiles, and a command post. For guidance, it was planned to use inertial and satellite navigation. The key enterprises in this direction were the Kiev plant «Arsenal» and the Kharkov enterprise «Khartron-Arkos». Both structures retained an impressive technological backlog inherited from the USSR, and part of it was probably used to develop the correction and flight control system for the Thunder-2 program. At the same time, Western systems, such as IFOS-500 series gyroscopes, were also purchased for the Grom-2 project, which made it possible to compare the capabilities of Ukrainian and foreign solutions.
The starting mass of the Thunder rocket ammunition is about three tons. This is a ton more than in the Soviet Tochka. Of these, from 480 to 495 kg falls on the warhead. The declared range of the Grom-2 OTRK is up to 500 km. The tractor is based on KrAZ with a wheel arrangement of 10×10.
Rocket testing began in 2017. A year later, Grom-2 drove through Kyiv during the parade in honor of Independence Day in Kyiv. In 2021, there were reports in the Ukrainian media about the 80 percent readiness of weapons, but hundreds or even dozens of Grom-2 units did not appear in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to the most conservative estimates, the completion of Grom-2 to a version with two warheads (range of 280 and 500 kilometers) and the start of mass production should have cost the Ukrainian budget (or foreign investors in the project) about 450-500 million dollars. Apparently, the money was found.
