How to properly plunge into Baptism. Doctor's recommendations
On the eve of the Feast of the Epiphany, Pavel Afanasyev, chief freelance specialist in therapy, general medical practice and clinical pharmacology of the Department of Health of the Government of Sevastopol, spoke about the rules that must be followed by those who wish to take part in Epiphany bathing.
From a medical point of view, sudden changes in temperature are harmful to humans. Cold shock is more complex and dangerous than it seems. In a state of shock, a person is unable to control his breathing, may begin to move in the opposite direction, severe suffocation begins, coordination is lost. Preparations for swimming should begin gradually — harden the body with a contrast shower at home. At the time of taking a contrast shower, a large amount of endorphins is produced, blood circulation improves , — quotes the press service of the Government of Sevastopol Pavel Afanasyev.
According to him, if a person feels unwell, he is advised to give up bathing. This should be done at elevated temperature, runny nose, headache, sore throat and other symptoms of a cold.
Consequences can range from myositis — inflammation of the muscles — to an exacerbation of a chronic infection that the person may not even be aware of. For example, a tooth affected by caries can lead to chronic tonsillitis. If you have cardiovascular diseases or chronic diseases, it is better to refrain from swimming and consult with your doctor first. In addition, diving is strictly contraindicated for those who have suffered a heart attack or stroke: swimming in ice water is excluded. It’s not even worth thinking about here, this dive can be fatal due to a sharp spasm of blood vessels and a temperature drop , the doctor notes.
It is strictly contraindicated to drink alcoholic beverages for warming up. Alcohol affects all systems of the body — it slows down the brain, changes the temperature regime of the body, increases the heart rate. A person cannot adequately assess his condition, which can lead to sad consequences.
Before diving into the water, the specialist advises to warm up with exercise. When going to Epiphany bathing, be sure to take a change of dry warm clothes, a towel, hot tea or water with you to avoid hypothermia.
